A portion of Tacoma’s Old Town Dock has been temporarily closed after a harbor seal gave birth to a pup on the dock.

Parks Tacoma closed the area to give the mother and pup space to bond and nurse without being disturbed. Seal pups often spend time on shore because they do not yet have enough blubber to handle long stretches in the cold Puget Sound water, so people may occasionally see them resting on beaches or docks during pupping season.

Visitors are asked to stay at least 100 yards away from seals, keep dogs leashed, and avoid touching or trying to move a pup, even if it appears to be alone. In most cases, the mother is nearby or may return after spending time in the water, and human interference can make things worse for the animal.

Tacoma on the Go is inviting residents to explore McKinley Hill on foot next month during a guided neighborhood walk.

The next Walk Tacoma event takes place Wednesday, August 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The roughly 1-mile walk will highlight McKinley Hill through the stories of residents, business owners, artists, and community advocates who have helped shape the neighborhood.

The route will include places such as McKinley Park, the Pipeline Trail, local businesses, and longtime neighborhood organizations. The walk will wrap up at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 969, located at 3510 McKinley Ave., with refreshments, conversation, and a chance to connect with neighbors. Parks Tacoma is asking residents to weigh in on the future of Dune Peninsula.

The agency is collecting feedback as it looks ahead to long-range planning for the park, including future programming, events, and possible improvements. The survey is open to community members, neighbors, concertgoers, park users, and anyone who cares about how Dune Peninsula develops over time.

Dune Peninsula has become one of Tacoma’s most distinctive waterfront parks, with open space, views, trails, and event use all sharing the same site.
