Night Out Returns

National Night Out returns Tuesday, August 4, giving neighbors a reason to step outside, meet one another, and build a little more community close to home.

The annual event encourages neighborhoods to host block parties, cookouts, festivals, and casual gatherings on the first Tuesday in August. The idea is simple: bring people together under positive circumstances, strengthen neighborhood connections, and make it easier for residents, community groups, and local law enforcement to know one another before there is ever a crisis.

Residents can look for a nearby National Night Out gathering or register their own event here.

Free Weeknight Teen Program

Parents and grandparents looking for a safe evening option for teens this summer may want to know about Summer Late Nights.

The free Tacoma Public Schools program gives middle and high school students a place to spend weeknights with food, activities, friends, and supervised fun. The program runs Monday through Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. through August 28, with 10 locations available around Tacoma.

Families can register once and then drop in at any participating location. Summer Late Nights is offered in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, Parks Tacoma, and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties. Locations and registration information are available through Tacoma Public Schools’ Summer Late Nights page.

Summit Fest at Crystal

Tacoma residents looking for a summer escape to the mountains may want to put Crystal Mountain’s Summit Fest on the calendar.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Crystal Mountain Resort. Summit Fest is an evening gathering at the summit, with live music, mountain views, food, festivities, and a chance to enjoy Crystal after dark. It is also timed around one of summer’s best sky-watching stretches, with the Perseid meteor shower building in August.

It is not in Tacoma, but that may be part of the appeal: a chance to get out of town, ride up into the mountains, and spend a summer evening surrounded by alpine scenery. Crystal Mountain notes that outdoor events may be affected by weather, smoke, or other safety conditions, so visitors should check the event page before heading up..
