Under the Big Top in Tacoma

Cirque Italia’s Water Circus Metropolis is performing in Tacoma through Monday, July 13. The traveling production combines the atmosphere of a traditional European-style circus with a custom stage holding 35,000 gallons of water. Remaining performances are scheduled throughout the weekend and Monday evening, with tickets ranging from $15 to $65.
Founded in 2012, Cirque Italia presents a modern, animal-free spectacle built around acrobatics, theatrical lighting and water effects. Performers swing from aerial apparatuses, flip over trapezes, balance and contort above the stage, and race through the tent on BMX bikes and roller skates while fountains and curtains of rain move in time with the action. The production also incorporates lasers, bubbles, mermaids and even dinosaurs into the show.
Shows take place under the big top in the Tacoma Mall parking lot at 4502 S. Steele St. Several performances are already more than half sold, and additional evening shows have been added for Saturday and Sunday. Tickets and the latest availability are available through Cirque Italia’s Tacoma event page..
John Quincy Adams Takes Center Stage

Bob Crawford, best known as the bassist and a founding member of The Avett Brothers, will appear at Tacoma’s Spanish Ballroom this Tuesday, July 14, to discuss his new book, America’s Founding Son: John Quincy Adams, from President to Political Maverick. Crawford will be joined in conversation by Chris Staudinger of Pretty Gritty Tours for a look at Adams’ turbulent political career, his evolving opposition to slavery and the abolitionist movement that helped reshape American politics in the decades before the Civil War.
The all-ages event is part of McMenamins’ Great Northwest Author Tour History Pub series. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. at the Spanish Ballroom, 565 Broadway. Tickets are $16.21, and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase through Hi-Voltage Records

Fife I-5 Closures Begin Monday

Drivers traveling through Fife should expect overnight delays on Interstate 5 beginning Monday, July 13. Crews are scheduled to close the two left lanes in both directions between 20th Street Drive East and Exit 137 on several nights this week, with closures generally beginning around 7 p.m. and continuing into the early morning.
The work will affect both northbound and southbound traffic, although exits 136, 136A and 136B are expected to remain open. All lanes are scheduled to reopen each day after the overnight work periods, but drivers should allow extra time, watch for changing lane patterns and consider alternate routes during evening and early-morning travel.
