6,000 Bicyclists to Ride Through Tacoma Today

Official route through Tacoma of the Seattle to Portland bicycle ride today.

Drivers in South Tacoma and Pierce County should plan for extra traffic tomorrow as more than 6,000 cyclists pass through the area for the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.

The annual STP ride takes place Saturday and Sunday, with cyclists covering about 207 miles from Seattle to Portland. According to The News Tribune, WSDOT says drivers should expect delays early Saturday morning on SR 7 in Pierce County, along with added bicycle traffic on local roads and state highways. The route begins at the University of Washington and heads south through Kent, Auburn, Puyallup, Parkland, Spanaway, and JBLM before continuing toward Oregon.

For South Tacoma-area drivers, the biggest takeaway is to slow down, allow extra time, and watch for large groups of cyclists sharing the road. Riders will be moving through intersections, shoulders, and local routes throughout the morning, and WSDOT is asking both drivers and cyclists to follow traffic laws and stay alert. Readers can view the full route and impacted roads through Cascade Bicycle Club’s STP route information link below.

Booms Possible Near JBLM

Residents near Joint Base Lewis-McChord may hear training noise this weekend.

JBLM says it will conduct day and nighttime demolitions training starting Saturday, July 11 at 9 a.m. and continuing until approximately 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 12. During that window, people in surrounding communities may hear loud booms or other training-related sounds.

JBLM notes that noise from military training can vary depending on weather, wind direction, cloud cover, and the type of training being conducted. Residents with questions or concerns can review JBLM’s noise and public disturbance information page for more details.

Loaded Potatoes Head to 6th

A Tacoma street-food favorite is getting a permanent home.

OverFlo Potato is preparing to open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant at 2710 6th Ave., taking over the former Pizza Time Pub space. The family-owned business, launched by Destiny and Carwin Hawkins nearly three years ago, has built its following around loaded baked potatoes piled high with hearty toppings and comfort-food flavor.

The new 6th Avenue location is expected to open in August, giving OverFlo Potato a bigger stage and giving Tacoma another locally grown food business to root for. For fans who have followed them from pop-ups and street-food service, this marks a major next step — and for 6th Ave, it adds another casual, family-friendly food stop to one of Tacoma’s best-known business districts.
