Uwajimaya Returning to Tacoma

Uwajimaya’s long-awaited return to Tacoma appears to be moving forward.

The Asian grocery chain, which was founded in Tacoma in 1928, announced earlier this year that it had signed a lease for a new store in the former Hobby Lobby space at Tacoma Central. The company has said the store is planned for 2027, bringing Uwajimaya back to the city where Fujimatsu Moriguchi first started the business nearly a century ago.

According to reporting from The News Tribune, the project is still active, even though a banner visible from State Route 16 has caused some people to wonder whether space is still available at the property. Uwajimaya President and CEO Denise Moriguchi told the paper the company may have initial plans and renderings ready to share in the coming weeks, and said she was going to ask her team about adding “Coming Soon” posters or window signage.

The return is a meaningful one for Tacoma. Uwajimaya began as a small business serving Japanese farmers, loggers, and fishermen, and later grew into one of the Northwest’s best-known Asian grocery brands. For local shoppers, the new store would add another major food destination to Central Tacoma — and for the company, it marks a homecoming almost 100 years in the making.

Hockney Art Film Plays July 21

The Grand Cinema is bringing David Hockney to the big screen this month with a special showing of Exhibition on Screen: David Hockney at the Royal Academy of Arts.

The documentary focuses on two major Hockney exhibitions held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2012 and 2016. Featuring intimate interviews with Hockney and rare access from director Phil Grabsky, the film explores the creativity, personality, and influence of an artist widely considered one of Britain’s most popular modern masters.

The Grand says it is bringing the film back in the wake of Hockney’s passing as a cinematic tribute to his life and work. The 85-minute documentary screens Tuesday, July 21, with showtimes at 1:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.
