Tacoma Rescue Mission - Tacoma Local Minute

Tacoma Rescue Mission has scheduled a grand-opening ceremony and ribbon cutting for its downtown campus expansion on Saturday, Nov. 14. The event, planned for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 425 S. Tacoma Way, is set to include a ceremony, tours and a light luncheon. The Mission says the expansion will let it open its doors to twice as many neighbors in need.

The project will increase the number of men’s shelter beds from 90 to 187, according to the Mission. It will also expand the men’s shower count from 10 to 22 and double the capacity of its New Life Recovery program, from 25 to 50.

The work involves more than adding sleeping space. Pierce County’s project description says the renovation is intended to increase overnight capacity without relying on floor mats or bunk beds, while restoring and enlarging the dining hall and improving kitchen, bathroom and heating systems. A June report by The News Tribune also raised questions about the cost of staffing and operating the larger facility; the Mission’s current opening announcement does not say how many of the new spaces will be in use on opening day.

The published timelines leave a question: Tacoma Rescue Mission is calling Nov. 14 its grand opening, while Pierce County still lists December 2026 as the project’s estimated completion. The Mission says shelter services continued during construction. Its scheduled tours may offer the clearest look yet at what is ready—and what remains before the expansion reaches full capacity.
