Holy Rosary Church - Tacoma Local Minute

Holy Rosary Church

Holy Rosary Church’s future is still unresolved. Recent Facebook claims that the Vatican had saved the Tacoma landmark from destruction are misleading, according to The News Tribune’s Becca Most. Her October 7 report finds the latest appeal is still pending.

The church at 424 S. 30th St. has stood since 1920 and has been closed since 2018. Water damage and unsafe conditions forced it out of use, and its parish later merged with other congregations. The familiar steeple remains, but worshippers haven’t returned to the building.

The appeal concerns whether Holy Rosary can stop being a Catholic worship space. Preservation advocates are challenging that decision. The archdiocese told Most that no demolition orders have been issued, while the building remains unsafe to occupy.

A Vatican decision and a restored church are two different milestones. An earlier appeal succeeded without resolving the building’s future. Most’s full News Tribune report explains why—and the expensive hurdle that remains before anyone could use it again. Read it here.
