A new and expanded playground is taking shape at Cloverdale Park on Tacoma’s Eastside. Parks Tacoma says construction began in October on the $496,000 project, which is funded by a voter-approved bond. The playground’s footprint will grow, adding swings, boulder climbers and climbing structures with a wide slide.
The design drew on input from more than 230 children and Eastside community members. Their ideas helped determine the equipment and layout for the neighborhood play area. The project also includes accessible sidewalk extensions, new trees and benches.
One major change is already complete: a power pole that once stood in the middle of the field has been removed, and the lines have been placed underground. Former City Councilmember Catherine Ushka had advocated for the change as part of efforts to bring more investment and recognition to the Eastside and South End. Tacoma Public Utilities worked with Parks Tacoma on the utility relocation.
The playground will remain closed while construction continues, with completion expected in early 2027. The sport courts will stay open during the work. Once finished, the park will have a larger play area and a more open lawn, shaped in part by the people who use it.
