Poppy House Art Cafe - Tacoma Local Minute

A new downtown Tacoma spot invites visitors to trade the usual café routine for an afternoon of making things. Poppy House Art Cafe opened October 5 at 744 Market St., Unit 102A, with painting, bracelet making, collaging and bedazzling among the projects visitors can try.

The idea grew out of owner Charisma Lawler’s own experience with crafting. During a difficult period, she found that bedazzling offered a creative outlet when going out to bars or taking part in bigger social activities felt like too much. A visit to an art café in New York showed her a place where people could craft alone or with friends—and gave her a model for Poppy House.

Visitors book a two-hour session for $25 and can choose from the available crafts, with supplies included. The café provides beads, markers, stickers, charms, paint, craft paper and items such as hair clips and brushes to decorate. Advance online reservations are required.

Poppy House also hosts events and can be rented for gatherings such as birthday parties, baby showers and book clubs. Lawler has held movie nights and plans more events, including Halloween activities. The News Tribune’s Minnie Stephenson has more on Lawler’s inspiration and what she hopes to build at Poppy House.
