Buddy’s Chicken & Waffles Comes Home to South Tacoma Way

Nearly five years after launching from a ghost kitchen at Edison Square, Buddy’s Chicken & Waffles has returned to South Tacoma Way. The popular Tacoma restaurant has soft-opened its second permanent location at 5439 South Tacoma Way—just up the street from the alley where customers first began picking up Buddy Brown’s chicken-and-waffle creations in 2021.

The new restaurant brings Buddy’s hand-breaded halal chicken, seasoned fries and waffles in flavors ranging from Southern cornbread to strawberry shortcake back to the neighborhood where the business began. It also adds something Buddy’s customers have been missing: a dedicated dinner option, with the South Tacoma Way location advertising hours from 4 to 9 p.m.

Tacoma’s Armory Is Turning Into a Giant Roller Rink

Tacoma’s historic Armory is becoming a giant roller rink this fall, giving skaters the chance to roll across what Tacoma Arts Live describes as the largest flat floor in the Pacific Northwest. The next Sunday Open Skate runs from 1 to 6 p.m. September 13, with music, plenty of room to cruise and a welcoming atmosphere for all ages and experience levels.

Never worn roller skates—or haven’t tried since childhood? Tomorrowland Junior Roller Derby will offer a beginner lesson at 12:30 p.m. covering how to stand, move, stop and fall safely. Admission is $15.41, skate rentals are available for $5, and additional skating dates are scheduled through December.

Short visits now begin at $1, although drivers staying between two and three hours will pay $3 instead of the previous $2 flat rate.

Tacoma has also introduced a $120 monthly permit for drivers earning $60,756.80 per year or less. The discounted permit is available at the Tacoma Parking Garage on South 10th Street and could cut a frequent commuter’s monthly parking expense in half/
