Beer Train Runs Tomorrow

A unique Saturday night adventure is rolling through the foothills near Mount Rainier this weekend.
The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad Beer Tasting Train offers a 21-and-over evening ride behind a historic steam locomotive, combining forest scenery, local beer, and live music. The experience includes tastings from three Tacoma-area breweries — Odd Otter Brewing Company, E9 Brewing Co., and Narrows Brewing — plus music from Rhythm and Verse.
The train departs from Elbe and travels to the museum in Mineral, with the evening scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are normally listed at $65 for adults, but readers can use promo code BEER25 for 25% off this Saturday’s July 11 ride.
For anyone looking for a date night, a weekend outing, or a very Northwest way to spend a summer evening, this one checks a lot of boxes: steam train, local beer, live music, and Mount Rainier-area scenery.
Hairspray Hits the Stage

Hairspray opens tomorrow night at Tacoma Musical Playhouse, and opening weekend is already close to selling out.
The production was recently featured on CityLine, where director and choreographer Harry Turpin joined cast members Maya Washington and Mariesa Genzale to talk about what makes the show such a joyful, high-energy, and meaningful musical. With its big songs, colorful characters, and message of acceptance, Hairspray is expected to be one of TMP’s major summer productions.
All seats are reserved, and tickets are available now at tmp.org. If opening weekend is any indication, this may be one to book early before the best seats are gone.
New Backyard Habitat Program Opens

Tacoma residents have a new way to make their yards more welcoming to birds, pollinators, and other local wildlife.
Tacoma Habitat at Home officially launched July 1 as a new pilot program designed to help residents transform outdoor spaces into healthier, more wildlife-friendly habitats. Created in partnership with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and Pierce Conservation District, the program offers free site visits, personalized plant recommendations, hands-on workshops, and certification for qualifying backyard habitat projects.
The goal is to help residents support pollinators, increase biodiversity, conserve water, and create stronger connections to nearby open spaces such as Wapato Hills and Trafton Slope. Enrollment for the pilot area is open now through September 30, and a waitlist is available for future expansion across Tacoma.
Residents interested in learning more, applying, or joining the waitlist can visit Tacoma’s Habitat at Home program page.
