UW Tacoma VMRC - Tacoma Local Minute

UWT’s Veteran and Military Resource Center is based on campus, but its online directory can be useful well beyond it. In a report for the Weekly Volcano, Keelin Everly-Lang notes that you don’t have to be a UW student to use the public list of local and state resources for veterans, service members and military families.

The directory points to help with basic needs, behavioral health, VA benefits, careers, health care, legal services and more. That can matter when finding the right support feels like a project of its own. The center’s staff help military-connected students sort through benefits and connect with resources; I’m focusing here on the directory’s broader usefulness, not suggesting that all center services are open to nonstudents.

The need is substantial in the region. The Volcano reports that about 20% of UW Tacoma students are military-affiliated, with Joint Base Lewis-McChord nearby and a much larger military community across the area. The center’s work also recognizes that the transition to civilian life can bring challenges beyond paperwork, including finding community and support.

The online list is a practical place to start—even if you’ve never set foot on campus. The Volcano article goes further into the people helping veterans navigate those hurdles and the needs that can still be hard to meet: read the full report in the Volcano, here.
