Mass is bringing a new kind of nightlife to downtown Tacoma: a second-floor space for DJ sets, silent discos, sound baths and other sensory-focused events. It’s at 726 Pacific Avenue, above the Lumora Theatre, and its first event drew five DJs for a dance party on Oct. 16.
The venue’s founder, Heath Hollensbe, describes the idea as a place to experience music through more than just sound. In its Oct. 23 report, The News Tribune spoke with Hollensbe about the concept and the space’s plans for events that range from raves to sound baths.
Mass is part of Mass + Matter, the arts nonprofit Hollensbe founded. The same organization also operates the Lumora Theatre and The Federal Building, which host their own mix of performances, exhibits and community experiences.
The space itself has had a very different use: it became available after a dog-training business moved out. Now it’s being shaped into a venue where the programming can change from one gathering to the next. Some events may have age restrictions, depending on the show.
Hollensbe has said Mass may host events three or four times a week, though that isn’t a fixed schedule. What does a “sensory temple” feel like in practice—and how will this new space fit into Tacoma’s nightlife? Read The News Tribune’s full report on Mass for the founder’s take and more about the venue.
